Plasticland "Color Appreciation" (1984)

  • O.K. This band loved their acid. A lot of sixties influenced acid bands arose in the eighties drawing on a range of influences, primarily from sixties garage bands made infamous on compilations such as the Pebbles series, launched in 1979, which spawned thousands of bands trying to recreate the sound of those heady times of mid to late sixties suburban America, when acid dripped through the consciousness of suburban brats everywhere.

  • Plasticland obviously knew their acid culture, but they and bands like them, expanded the work done in the sixties into a very carefully crafted underground artform of the eighties, consistent with the sounds that spawned the obnoxious counter culture twenty years before. Plasticland remind me of acid academics, recreating an artform from an historic standpoint, yet at the same time giving the impression of living the lifestyle to the hilt from the vantage of 20 years experience. Their fashion sense echoed psychedelic London circa 1967, which probably means they didn't want to be labelled too closely as garage rock, but I've labelled them as that so there!

  • These guys were smart. Most of the brainbuds were from vocalist Glenn Rehse and bass player John Frankovic. The songs range in tempo from some fast distorted rides like 'Elongations' to the tripped out madness of 'Sipping the Bitterness'. The back up vocals are are a perfect addition to Rehses' vocals and the guitar of Dan Mullen knocks me every time, especially with the fuzzbox and distortion kicking in. The songs have been calculated to cause maximum effect and although that raw edge has been contained somewhat in comparison to alot of Pebbles stuff, that doesn't mean to say that the songs on this album sound contrived. Side one is almost perfect. Color Appreciation is the second best of Plasticlands' four albums and is highly recommended. It was released on the French label Lolita.

Excellent uploads but there seems to be a problem. I downloaded "Color Appreciation" and all of the tunes are cut off before they end... incomplete if you will. Could you check that for me?

And on a side note, the cover you have for the same is for the LP "Plasticland" not "Color Appreciation".

Thanks again

Hey Max

Been downloading it myself to check out what yoy say about songs beeing cut before end, and no songs had that problem. Try downloading agian maybe? Or check your player. You was right about the cover. The two first albums by Plasticland are nearly similar in songs and nearly the same cover-art as well. But this one I put out now is the original. Thanks for the info.

Down loading it again. Will let you know the outcome. I use Adobe Audition to check all files I download and have downloaded a few from Rapidshare today with no problems.

Again, your blog is very cool. Big WOV fan here and saw Stan Ridgway this past summer in Cleveland.

Same problem....the first song "Sections" comes out at 1:33
"Her Decay" comes out at 2:22
They all end abruptly.

Just for shits and giggles, what are the times you get?

The previous Plasticland LP came out just fine. Oh well...sometimes you win sometimes you lose.

Thanks anyway.

Any one else who's been downloading Palsticland expirienced the same problem? Please notify me, if so.

4 download attempts and they all come out the same. Just can't figure it out. I've snatched multiple other files from Rapidshare from a variety of other blogs and have had no problems.

I guess the Gods of file sharing have spoken...."Max is not to have this one"!

Ha ha...thanks again.

Just figured it out....it's Adobe Audition! For some reason it will only show some of this file. Foobar plays the whole thing.

Now....why is Adobe doing this? Hmmm.

Hey Max

Never heard of that problem before. But now the mystery is solved! And we got the right cover as well!
